Queen Maeve and Ailli
This piece is based on the Cattle raid of Cooley (Tain Bo Cualigne). The figures represent Queen Maeve with the brown bull of Cooley and her husband, Ailli King of Connacht, with his white bull of Connacht. The tale goes that Maeve and Aillis' possessions equalled each other in every aspect all but one Ailli had the white bull. Maeve determined to make up the deficit by gaining possession of the most famous bull in Ireland the brown bull of Cooley. When Maeve could not obtain the bull on loan she gathered an army to invade Ulster to take the bull by force. It is the central epic of the Ulster cycle.
