Diarmuid and Grainne

Diarmuid and Grainne is a tragic love story from the Finn cycle. Diarmuid, one of the Fianna,  was forced to elope with Grainne who was betrothed to Finn Mac Cumaille, the leader of the Fianna at the time. It is said that Finn consumed with jealousy had the Fianna track the couple through the land never allowing them to set up home always having to keep one step ahead of the Fianna. All over Ireland today are caves and rocks bearing the couples' name as it said that they took refuge in these places. The Fianna eventually caught up with the couple on Benbulben mountain in Sligo where Diarmuid was slain by an enchanted boar. It was within Finn's power to save Diarmuid but he choose to let him die. After this the fianna refused to fight for Finn until Grainne intervened and made the peace
